Lianxing Wen -> Research -> Seismology:
Theoretical and Observational Seismology
Our primary goal is to discover and map seismic structures
in the Earth's interior and to understand these seismic structures in
the context of composition, temperature and dynamics of different
parts of the Earth.
Our approaches toward the problem have been both theoretical and
observational.
We have developed hybrid methods
with can handle seismic wave propagation problem in
heterogeneous regions at large distances.
Hybrid methods are combinations of analytical and numerical methods,
with numerical methods applied in heterogeneous regions only and
analytical methods outside. We have also developed migration techniques
to best utilize the large amount of dense seismic data.
Observationally, we have utilized analog and digital seismic data
to map out fine structures in various parts of the Earth's interior.
