I just defended my PhD. thesis titled "Failure mode, strain localization and permeability evolution in porous sedimentary rocks", supervised by prof. Teng-fong Wong. I currently continue to work on deformation of porous granular rocks such as sandstone and limestone. These rocks form important aquifers and hydrocarbon reservoirs and to some extent can also be used as analogs to fault gauge material. Understanding of how granular rocks behave upon stress changes is vital to planning and maintaining many engineering activities and may provide insight into stages of earthquake cycle. In my work we aim at understanding the micromechanics of compaction and dilatancy in sandstone and limestone by combining laboratory experiments with microstructure analysis and micromechanical modeling.
